Description

Level of Difficulty: Beginner Do-It-Yourselfer – Easy
Completion Time: 1 day
This well-proportioned island has an ample work surface, great for folding clothes in the laundry room or doing crafts and odd jobs in the workshop. The good news? You don’t need to be an experienced carpenter. The island consists of two storage modules and a ceramic tile counter that are easy to assemble and create. Novice do-it-yourselfers with basic tools and good materials will be able to complete the work in a few days, allowing time for the adhesive and grout to dry.

  • 5/8"-thick plywood panel, 42" x 66"
  • 77 ceramic tiles, 6" x 6"
  • Pre-glued melamine edge banding

STEPS
  •   STEP 1: PREPARE THE COUNTER TOP PANEL

  • STEP 3: ATTACH THE PRE-GLUED BANDING
  • STEP 4: ASSEMBLE THE CABINETS
1.1. Cut a 5/8″-thick plywood panel 42″ wide by 66″ long.

2.1. Use a notched trowel to apply tile adhesive to the panel. Cover an area the size of 3 or 4 tiles at a time.

2.2. Lay the 6″ x 6″ tiles. Use spacers to ensure even spacing between the tiles for professional-looking grout joints.

2.3. When the adhesive is dry, apply the grout with a rubber float.

2.4. Wipe off the excess grout with a damp cloth.

3.1. Stick pre-glued white melamine edge banding around all four edges of the counter.

4.1. Assemble the two storage units.

4.2. Fasten the counter to the two units with brackets.
